Paying for a Chance to Save Money: Two-Part Tariffs in Name-Your-Own-Price Markets

چکیده
We examine the profitability of two-part tariffs in name-your-own-price (NYOP) markets using incentivecompatible laboratory experiments. An NYOP seller who uses a two-part tariff charges an upfront nonrefundable bidding fee akin to an entrance fee into his store. We find two-part tariffs can be profitable to NYOP sellers, and we identify a strong moderator of this profitability: a decision aid that calculates the payoff consequences of candidate bids. To compare the profitability of two-part tariffs with that of other profit-enhancing strategies proposed in the literature, as well as to interpret the effect of our decision-aid manipulation, we propose and estimate at the individual level a model of entry and bidding that nests both Expected Utility Theory and Prospect Theory as special cases. Counterfactual simulations based on the estimated model reveal two-part tariffs outperform the minimum-bid strategy, and the optimal bidding fee depends on the presence of our decision aid and on subjects’ experience with our bidding task. We estimate that optimal two-part tariffs can increase NYOP seller profits by about 9% in the long run.

Paying for a Chance to Save Money: Buyer Behavior in Name-Your-Own-Price Markets with Bidding Fees
According to a recently introduced theory (Spann, Zeithammer and Häubl 2010), a name-your-own-price retailer should benefit from charging prospective buyers a non-refundable bidding fee rather than providing the bidding opportunity free of charge. We use an incentive-compatible experiment to provides the first empirical test of the profitability of bidding fees. Confirming the theory’s qualitat...

Name-Your-Own-Price is a popular interactive pricing mechanism in Electronic Commerce that lets both, buyer and seller, influence the price of a product. At the outset, a seller defines a secret threshold price indicating the minimum price he is willing to sell the product for. Subsequently, a buyer is asked to place a bid indicating her willingness-to-pay for the product offered. If the bid va...
متن کاملDoes the Internet Promote Better Consumer Decisions? The Case of Name-Your-Own-Price Auctions
The Internet has enabled consumers to make more informed decisions more conveniently with apparently more efficient price-clearing mechanisms than was available before its advent. One such mechanism is the name-yourown-price auction. The authors study the extent to which decisions made in such an auction are rational in relation to an economic model. The results from two independent markets sho...
متن کاملMeasuring the Frictional Costs of Online Transactions: The Case of a Name-Your-Own-Price Channel
We study the offers submitted by consumers to a large Name-Your-Own-Price (NYOP) online retailer. A distinctive feature of this retailer is that it allows consumers to repeatedly submit offers on one and the same product. While consumers could identify the threshold price (the minimum price for which the retailer is willing to sell) by incrementing their offer in small steps in each consecutive...
